He thought he was making a sensible investment.
He was a retired professor. Educated, careful with money, and planning for the years ahead with his wife.
They had spent years saving. That money was meant to look after them as they grew older, and leave something for their children.
It started with a small investment. The people seemed professional. They took their time and earned his trust. Everything he could see suggested his money was growing. So he invested more.
By the time he discovered none of it was real, he’d lost more than €1 million.
Then he had to tell his four children. A lifetime of saving, and the security he and his wife had planned for, was gone.
It was a sophisticated fraud designed to feel genuine.
